When to use Imperfect

what you used to do

[ES] Cuando era niño, jugaba al fútbol todos los días.
[EN] When I was a child, I played football every day.

what you were doing

estaba, estabas, estábamos, estaban plus a verb's present participle (ending in -ndo).

[ES] La recepcionista estaba hablando con los clientes.
[EN] The receptionist was talking to the customers.

[ES] ¿Quién estaba usando la impresora esta mañana?
[EN] Who was using the printer this morning?

for descriptions in the past

[ES] Ellas amaban la naturaleza.
[EN] They loved nature.

refer to something that has never changed, like someone's name

[ES] La reina se llamaba Blanca.
[EN] The queen's name was Blanca.

Regular Verbs

Drop the ending(-ar, -er, -ir), add the following:

	-ar	-er	-ir
yo	-aba	-ía	-ía
tú	-abas	-ías	-ías
él / ella / usted	-aba	-ía	-ía
nosotros / nosotras	-ábamos	-íamos	-íamos
vosotros / vosotras	-abais	-íais	-íais
ellos / ellas / ustedes	-aban	-ían	-ían

Note that -ar group has accent mark with nosotros / nosotras; -er and -ir group have accent mark in all forms.

For example:

	jugar	comer	vivir
yo	jugaba	comía	vivía
tú	jugabas	comías	vivías
él / ella / usted	jugaba	comía	vivía
nosotros / nosotras	jugábamos	comíamos	vivíamos
ellos / ellas / ustedes	jugaban	comían	vivían

Irregular Verbs

Only three verbs are irregular in the imperfect:

	ser	ir	ver
yo	era	iba	veía
tú	eras	ibas	veías
él / ella / usted	era	iba	veía
nosotros / nosotras	éramos	íbamos	veíamos
vosotros / vosotras	erais	ibais	veíais
ellos / ellas / ustedes	eran	iban	veían

Most -er verbs drop their e in the importfect, e.g. commer-> yo comía, poner -> tú ponías, beber -> ellas bebían.

But ver is special: it does not drop its e.
